The sound of men taunting each other, the clash of steel, and the other unfamiliar sounds of what she guessed were part of daily life in a castle woke Lily from a deep dreamless sleep as she reached for her cell phone.

For a moment she thought it was all a dream brought on by too much champagne, but nope, here she was, stuck in the past.

Lily stumbled out of bed and peered out the window, yawning. People were going back and forth, looking like they’d been up for a while. Men patrolled the battlements, looking to and fro as they scanned the surrounding countryside for enemies? Wild animals? Timothy and two other boys ran across the courtyard, scattering three chickens who were pecking at the ground.

From the other window, the one with the window seat and velvet cushion, Lily looked out at the ocean. If there was a library in this place, she’d find it and spend the rest of the day reading and enjoying the view.

“Geez, it’s early.”

This was the first time since she’d been a kid that the alarm on her phone didn’t wake her. It was an odd sensation, waking by the sounds of the castle and the sun shining in through the open window. The skies were blue, not a cloud in the sky, so she left the shutters open to let in the fresh ocean air.

Her stomach growled. She needed the facilities, and she desperately wanted a mug of coffee, tea, or anything with caffeine.

“Come on, stop moping. Look at your time here as an adventure. Think of how jealous Amy will be that you’re in medieval England.”

Lily washed as best she could. The fire in the bathing chamber had gone out during the night, so no hot water. The cold water from the pipe sent chills across her skin as she washed her face.

“Whew, that’s cold. If I wasn’t all the way awake, I am now.”

They’d tossed the water from the bath last night out the window onto the rocks, so she did the same with the water in the basin.

It would be much more practical if there was a drain to take the water down to the moat instead of someone having to empty the tub by hand.

The breathtaking view had her leaning on the windowsill, watching the waves. When her stomach growled again, Lily tried the door to her room. Still locked.

Good thing she had her hair picks. If someone didn’t come soon, she’d let herself out.

She sat in a chair in front of the fire, which had gone out while she’d slept. Amy would have rifled through Tristan’s trunk and everything else in the room, but not her. As much as she wanted to snoop so she could tell her friend what she’d seen and found, the idea of violating his privacy stopped her. He’d been nice enough to give up his room. The least she could do was respect his property.

The tunic and hose looked fine, barely wrinkled, which told her that she’d hardly moved while she slept.
